We want to thank you for allowing us the privilege of teaching and tutoring your children during spring break and through this difficult time of worldwide pandemic.
For the last week and a half we have been holding a Shakespeare Seminar. Shakespeare is the top of the English literary ladder. Each year students read Shakespeare plays in high school and on AP exams and in IB Literature programs Shakespeare is usually always tested or taught.
Shakespeare’s language challenges students in their understanding of English and in their ability to interpret meaning from both vocabulary and situation.
To help with reading skills and pronunciation we have been reading the plays out loud on video chat in zoom three times per week. Each day a different essay is assigned and two are required for the weekend. In addition they have had tests to make sure that they understand what they have read.
Overall, the students are performing well. Their reading is improving and their interpretation skills seem to be getting better. We are reading Three Shakespeare plays in this short period of time: King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, and hamlet.
Hamlet of course is universally known as perhaps Shakespeare’s most famous play. Romeo and Juliet is a timeless classic which is taught in secondary school. King Lear is generally accepted as Shakespeare’s masterpiece. Though not performed on stage as often as some of the others, the text, story, wordplay, characters, and psychological insights are excellent.
Once again, I thank you for the privilege of teaching your children!
